My parents had it quiet. They had three daughters, all of whom nearly got straight A's their entire education, including college. We didn't have to be prodded, nagged or disciplined for not doing our homework or studying for a examination. Report card time didn't bring tears, punishments or ultimatums.

Two months ago, I turned down the occasion to search for my adopted daughter’s birth parents.

Birth mother searches are a quietly growing movement among China adoptive parents like me. Very stillness. In spite of a few well-publicized cases, like that of Eline Kujiper, a Dutch toddler whose adoptive parents helped her to find her birth parents when she was 11 years old, most searching parents would broadcast you that the first rule of a China birth parent search is that we do not talk about the birth father search. Abandoning a child anonymously is the only way to give up a child for adoption in China (there is no relinquishment), and it’s against Chinese law. A newly freer China appears to be more permissive of these things, but no one with any experience of China would rely on its appearance of tolerance, which could easily last only as want as it’s convenient. And so while a few parents have gone through the Chinese media to search, most are searching through trusted intermediaries. And more than you would have expected have been remunerative.
