About four years ago this week, I traveled to Big Stone Gap, Va., to devote two days with the parents of two N.F.L. running backs, Thomas Jones, and his younger relative, Julius, then starters for the Jets and the Dallas Cowboys. What struck me most about their family was not that two of seven children ended up sharing an N.F.L. job interest – what are the odds? – but that all seven children from that town in coal sticks in southwest Virginia went to and graduated from college.

Why Are College Kids Defending Joe Paterno?

Wednesday unceasingly I was watching ESPN’s coverage of the firing of Penn State football omnibus Joe Paterno (an event whose magnitude one announcer just compared indirectly to the Kennedy assassination), and wondering how I’d note if my child was standing on Paterno’s lawn, or on the streets of State College, supporting a man who could gather a graphic description of a sexual assault on a young boy and then choose to walk away. I’d like to agree one of those students support the argument that the coach deserves “one more game.” And then I’d like them to utter me how they’d explain it to a 10-year-old.
