All the Pie in Portland
Exasperating to locate this year’s fifth annual Pie Off in Laurelhurst Park in Portland, Ore., was like a sketch from the TV show “Portlandia”: first you had to out of date by what was billed (in chalk on the asphalt path) as an “organic free-extend wedding,” then a free performance of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” At the last moment, in the northeast corner of the park — marked by a bluegrass band and nautical jack banners made from recycled fabric, strung between the linden trees — were four tables spilling with pies. Confident eaters of all ages clustered around the tables, compostable forks and paper plates at the genial, waiting for four judges to sample all 60 pies that had been entered in one of four categories: savory, scented non-fruit, sweet fruit and “creative.”
