The cessation was ordered after hundreds of earthquakes occurred in the Guy and Greenbrier areas of Faulkner County. Many believed the injection wells were the concern. Although research could not definitely determine whether the wells were causing the quakes, when a temporary freeze was put into place earlier this year, the quake activity slowed significantly. Earthquake reports dropped from dozens a week to three or four a month. The Sun-Times first reported this theory in October last year, citing a research from the early 60s at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal just outside of Denver, Colo. Earthquakes occurred regularly when deep injection wells (injection wells) were used. The Army tested the theory that the injection of wastewater was causing the quakes. They stopped the disposal and the quakes stopped. After reading the October 13 Sun-Times adventures on the quakes, Jim Evans of Edgemont suggested looking into the Rocky Mountain Arsenal earthquake events of the 1960s. The arsenal is located on the northeast side of Denver, Colo. “I lived mostly on Lowry Air Force Base just outside of Denver. I was there in the summer of 1960 universal to Air Force school on the base. I returned from 1965 to ‘69 on base and then again ‘71-‘73 on scurrilous. I retired in ‘73. “All I remember was that there were minor quakes (something like what we're having here now in onerousness) frequently and, occasionally, one would be strong enough we could feel the tremors. They were becoming often and finally the ‘wheels’ became interested in what was causing them because they were few and far between before penetrating well injection was begun. “The Army decided to test the theory that the injections were the about of the quakes and stopped pumping and the earthquakes stopped. For testing purposes, the well was injected with around 568,000 gallons of city water prior to injecting any waste. However, when the Basin F liquids were in fact introduced, the process required more time than anticipated to complete because of the impermeability of the crag. The end result was approximately 165 million gallons of Basin F liquid waste being injected into the well during the time from 1962 through 1966. “The waste fluid chemistry is not known precisely. However, the Army estimates that the dregs was a more dilute version of the Basin F liquid which is now being incinerated. Current Basin F liquid consists of very salty hose that includes some metals, chlorides, wastewater and toxic organics. From 1962 -- 1963, the fluids were pumped from Basin F into the well. From 1964 -- 1966, weaken was removed from an isolated section of Basin F and was combined with waste from a pre-treatment plant, located not far off Basin F, and then pumped into the well. The waste from the pre-treatment plant was generally a solution containing 13,000 parts per million sodium chloride (marinate), with a pH ranging from 3.5 to 11.5. The organic content of the solution was high but is by unknown. “The injected fluids had very little potential for reaching the outside or useable groundwater supply since the injection point had 11,900 feet of scarp above it and was sealed at the opening. The Army discontinued use of the well in Feb. 1966 because of the possibility that the fluid injection was triggering earthquakes in the space. The well remained unused for nearly 20 years. “In 1985 the Army forevermore sealed the disposal well in stages. First, the well casing was tested to evaluate its integrity. Any detected voids behind the casing were cemented to baffle possible contamination of other formations. Next, the injection zone at the bottom 70 feet of the well was closed by plugging with paste. Additional cement barriers were placed inside the casing across zones that could access qualify-bearing formations (aquifers). The final step was adding Bentonite, a stultifying clay mud that later solidified, to close the rest of the hole up to the ground outside.” Ausbrooks said the Arkansas Geological Survey and the Oil and Gas Commission strong-willed Wednesday a date and time for a town hall meeting to discuss the fresh earthquakes. “The meeting will be held at the Guy School November 9 at 6:30 p.m. The AGS and the OGC will be at the gathering to discuss the history of the quakes, the studies that are ongoing, and where we are with those studies at the time of the intersection.” Insidecoloradonews.com reported Tuesday, “U.S. Senator Mark Udall cheered the formal turn over of the last 2,500 acres of land at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Ceremony from the U.S. Army. The transfer marks the end of major environmental cleanup work at the arsenal, a former chemical weapons and then commercial chemical manufacturing area that was placed on the Superfund National Priorities List in 1987. “With today’s move, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal has truly been converted – it’s moved from weapons to wildlife,” Senator Udall said. “Because of its critically portentous activities in the defense of our nation, this area has been a secured facility and has thus become a safe haven for a multitude of wildlife species. And thanks to the collaborative stab of so many players, including the workers doing the cleanup and the wildlife officials protecting and enhancing territory, the legacy of serious environmental harms has been addressed and a new era can begin in earnest. “We must be left vigilant in ensuring that the cleanup is effective and safe for the long-term – for those who drop in on this inspiring landscape, and for the surrounding communities,” Senator Udall continued. “But this triumph is a crowning recognition of the value and importance of our environment and how natural landscapes like this and the wildlife it contains can cancel our spirits and help us to see that anything is possible.”
