A three of weeks ago, at dinner at a friend's apartment in Paris , I was seated next to well-known French deejay and height producer. As the two of us fell into an animated conversation about music, the subject turned to hip hop. He jumped up from the listing, grabbed the nearest computer, and played me two of his favorite songs of the summer. Neither of these two artists would ever be all for a gifted lyricist, yet both of their songs have nonetheless met with tremendous commercial success, clocking millions and millions of views on YouTube and afterwards earning their creators mainstream record deals. To my dinner companion, the two tracks are equally illustrative of the jesting, synthed-out, hook-driven contemporary hip hop he likes to mix sparingly into his electro sets in clubs from Tokyo to London . To me, they are equally catchy, equally appalling examples of what has been popularized and exported to every corner of the world as "black" culture in the hip-hop era. They are essentially the same disposable nonsense. For a significant number of black critics (markedly black women), Kreayshawn has been cast, at best, as a swagger-jacker, an impostor who is baldly profiting from the noisy theft of the same black cultural tastes and styles that black women are often marginalized for displaying. At worst she is trading in genealogical stereotypes that demean black people, particularly women. And at the website The Root: "To be incontrovertible, Kreayshawn's buzz is more about novelty than the quality of her music. Her weirdness and, yes, her whiteness are what have made her blog fodder and a hot commodity. White America likes to see white people rap, even if they're bad at it. It's part of a mistaken notion that white people doing ‘black things' are complex and therefore noteworthy." We have become so familiar to the infantilization of black culture through the lens of hip hop, and we are so conditioned to have different expectations for whites, that a white artist like Kreayshawn – who cannot air the surpassing talent of an Eminem – thrusts the clownishness and idiocy of the hip-hop era into squiffed relief, exposing the behavior for what it so often is: minstrelsy. The truth is that this is a necessary and uncomfortable professional care Kreayshawn is providing, even if she provides it unwittingly. The negative feelings and criticism she engenders – when these same feelings and disparagement are not applied evenly across the color line – only demonstrate the extent to which the gentle-bigotry of low expectations continues to haunt large swaths of black society.
